This week I’ve heard two very heartening things coming from the far reaches of the globe.
First, India has de-criminalized homosexual sex. For more details check out this LA Times article, but the nutshell version is that the Delhi high court finally decided that the illegality of consenting homosexual adults engaging in sex violated basic human rights under the Indian Constitution. To which I might so eloquently add “well, no shit!”
The second piece of good news comes out of Africa. Salon.com had a good recap of the recent decision in Uganda to outlaw female genital mutilation. I find genital mutilation so horrifying that I honestly can’t think of a snappy retort to this atrocity.
I realize this has been a weird, sometimes absymal year in terms of finances, Hollywood, and world events, but I wanted to share some news that didn’t involve celebrities or world financial markets. Instead, I wanted to share some good news about basic human rights and conditions. I hope these type of events continue and the resulting good karma can help bring the world back to homeostasis.
Wow to both pieces of news! I am happy to hear both of those. I have heard about the female genital mutilation in African and it is absolutely gruesome to do. I just can’t imagine how that has gone on for so long. Thanks for sharing!
